CNA & Nurse Aide Deadline Library

CNA renewal rules are state-specific — and even the credential name changes.

People commonly search for a “CNA license renewal,” but states may regulate the same kind of work as a certificate, registration, nurse-aide credential, nursing-assistant credential, or a state-specific designation. These guides use the regulator's current terminology while still answering the language people actually search.

Published state guides

Start with the worker's actual state credential.

Renewal cycles can be annual or biennial, and states can require paid work, continuing education, training documentation, background checks, or a separate reinstatement process after expiration. We do not apply one generic “renew every two years” rule across the country.

Why care organizations should care

One administrator may be tracking far more than one CNA certificate.

Home-care agencies, assisted-living communities, skilled-nursing facilities, hospice organizations, and healthcare staffing firms can have dozens or hundreds of frontline workers with different recurring credentials. Depending on the jurisdiction and role, the same roster may include CNA or nurse-aide credentials, RN and LPN licenses, home-care-aide or home-health-aide credentials, CPR/BLS, first aid, medication-aide credentials, and recurring training dates.

Deadline Hawk does not decide which credentials an employer legally needs. The regulator, payer, accreditor, employer policy, or training issuer remains the authority. The product's job is to keep verified dates visible, remind the responsible people, and preserve the new date after renewal.

From individual search to team workflow

Related care-worker credentials

CNA, HHA, HCA, and CHHA are not interchangeable labels.

A senior-care or home-care employer may have workers described as Certified Nursing Assistants, nurse aides, Home Health Aides, Home Care Aides, or Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aides. The correct credential and renewal rule depends on the state and role. For example, Washington regulates a Home Care Aide certification, New Jersey uses the Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide designation, and Indiana maintains a Home Health Aide registration pathway.

Why the distinction matters

  • A searcher may type “HHA license renewal” even when the state calls the credential a certification or registration.
  • Renewal periods, work requirements, continuing education, fees, and reinstatement rules can differ sharply by state.
  • Deadline Hawk tracks the verified date and follow-through; it does not substitute for the regulator's credential rules.

Terminology is part of accuracy

Search the common phrase. Publish the correct rule.

  • “CNA license” is common search language, but not every state calls the credential a license.
  • Each factual page names the regulator and the official credential it is actually describing.
  • State redesignations, portal changes, new CE requirements, and active renewal cycles can trigger reviews sooner than the annual minimum.
  • Every published guide carries published, updated, source-verification, and review-by dates.
